Introduction of The Caverns
The Caverns is a VERY unique place in general but is an absolute must visit as a concert venue. The Caverns is in Grundy County, Pelham, Tennessee and it’s a very small town. Pelham is also several hours from a few major airports, so we ended up just driving in from South Carolina. The drive wasn’t bad but if you need to fly then just be prepared to drive some once you land.
The venue offers a VIP package that gives you a shuttle to The Caverns and a guided tour of the Caves. The tour is prior to the concert so make sure you coordinate that outside of the concert schedule.
So why is it a unique place? Their concerts are IN the caves, or I guess the official term is called ‘subterranean’. But this is why we wanted to visit.
Arrival and First Impressions
The Caverns now offer different camping options from a tent to a yurt. At our visit this wasn’t available to we used their “Stay and Cave” VIP option. This gave us two nights at The Smoke House Lounge ( https://thesmokehouse.com/ ). It was a nice quaint stay. It was quiet and there’s a pretty cool burger joint with some live music about a football field away in the back side of the hotel.
There’s a really cool gift shop about 1/8th of mile from the hotel called The Amish Hippie. We got some homemade soaps, but they have so many different things that I would try and stop in if you can.
As I mentioned earlier the VIP package offered a shuttle to The Caverns but we opted to drive ourselves. One thing to note is that it is VERY dark riding into the area where The Caverns are located. Our cell signal was shot as well so hook up the GPS before you leave.
We had no issues getting there though even driving through the pitch black roads and once there we had no issues with parking or entering the venue. You don’t really recognize the caves until you get through and pass security but once you get to the entrance it is truly beautiful.
The Venue
When you get to the entrance you’re immediately immersed in the caves’ aura. Stones and colorful rocks surround your peripheral view. You’ll have a slight decline as you walk through the bends to the entrance. This is where the food and merch vendors will be and immediately from there you walk into the cave.
On the cavern’s website it says to dress warm because the cave is at a steady temperature of 59 degrees. It was noticeable but I didn’t feel cold.
If you can swing it, get the VIP package because this will put you in the front of the crowd right in front of the stage. It was absolutely amazing.
There was no echo or anything distorting the sound. In fact, it sounded incredible. If you are Closter phobic, I think you should be okay in the cave. It’s big enough to not feel like the walls are ‘caving’ (bad dad pun) so don’t worry yourself.
Bathrooms are off to the side as you walk into the front entrance of the cave and it never looked overly crowded even once the concert ended. We had our choice between mixed drinks and several local tap beer options and two food trucks outside.
Overall Impressions
Overall, we were extremely impressed with the set-up. I sometimes stress (way too much) about parking (see the Red Rocks review here) but it was so easy parking and walking to and into the venue.
Our most memorable moment was being several feet from the stage and looking back behind us seeing that we were INSIDE a freakin cave. I didn’t particularly like our Friday the 13th drive to the venue but it was an experience we get to talk about now that we did it.
Would you recommend The Caverns to others?
Absolutely! 100%. Yes! This is a must visit.
You can get your tickets from the website here: https://www.thecaverns.com/shows which will then take you to the tixr website.
