Who is Ganjacat

Who is Ganjacat?

Straight out of the grip that the COVID-19 pandemic had on all of us emerges a band – a Cali Reggae star is born – Ganjacat!

I had the pleasure of exchanging a few e-mails with Jesse and hearing about his and Tim’s story just made me that much more of a fan. Here is an overview of our conversation.

Ganjacat is a Cali Reggae band made up of Jesse Chong and Tim Roberts.

Jesse and Tim are no strangers to music.  Jesse is the leader and primary songwriter of the Chong Band and Tim’s original roots come from production and engineering musical masterpieces.  With musical elements from the Chong Band that are already rooted in the Cali Reggae genetic make-up, and Tim’s artistic genius it should be no surpise that Ganjacat comes out swinging for the fences.

Where is Ganjacat

Ganjacat brings you music out of Virginia Beach, VA where Jesse and Tim both went to the same high school, but it wasn’t until later in life the two merged and started making music together.

Background of Ganjacat

In 2010, Jesse worked on a song for Tim and then shortly after that Tim produced the two Chong Band albums.

Jesse drew inspiration early on from bands like Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana to start writing music which I think is it really cool that a differing genre of music can influence another.  That’s the beauty of music.

Fast Forward to 2020, the Ganjacat seed was planted and in 2022 the first signs of germinating began with the release of Ganjacat’s hard work.  In June of 2024, Ganjacat then opened up the Point Break Festival in Virginia Beach, VA where the big names of the Cali Reggae genre played such as Sublime, Pepper, Fortunate Youth, Rebelution, Tribal Seeds, The Expendables and more.

What’s so amazing to me, is that Ganjacat started as an experiment in the garage and is still in the garage-style production yet releasing incredible music.  Absolute brilliance and genius if you ask me.

What's next for Ganjacat

The plan currently for Ganjacat is to continue to release songs individually on a monthly basis with an eventual release of an album.  But with any start up and the creation of something big – it takes time and momentum.   The amazing thing about organic growth is that there is point in time where the launch just takes off and I believe we are nearing that point for Ganjacat.

Touring? We hope so and so does Ganjacat.  As soon as we hear or get word of a tour announcement, we will let you all know.  We will for sure be there!
